Voltage Ratings
There are two voltage ratings to be considered on an adapter, converter or inverter: the input voltage, and the output voltage. The input voltage indicates the voltage the conversion device is expecting to receive, and the output voltage indicates the voltage that the conversion device will provide. Either or both of the voltage ratings can be either a single voltage or a selectable voltage.
A conversion device with selectable voltage will have a slide switch or dial to select which voltage will be used. This has the advantage of allowing a single conversion device to work for multiple devices, which is most useful when the consumer has several devices that require different voltages but which will not be used simultaneously.
Voltage is indicated by the letter "V" or by the letters "VAC" (for AC voltage) or "VDC" (for DC voltage).
Frequency Ratings
The frequency rating is measured in Hertz (Hz) and indicates the number of cycles per second for alternating current (AC). In the US, the AC frequency is 60 Hz (one cycle per second) and is used as a reference in some timing circuits. Using a device on AC voltage with a different frequency will not cause a problem in most small electronic devices; however, timing circuits such as clocks will be affected. Specifically, using a 60 Hz device on foreign power (such as 50 Hz) may cause the circuits to run slow. Likewise, using a foreign device on our AC voltage can cause the timing circuits such as clocks to run fast.
Large electronic appliances such as televisions, VCR's and computers should not be used on 50 Hz power unless the device specifically states that it can accept both 50 and 60 Hz. Doing so can lead to damage to the device, converter and/or power wiring.
Understanding Capacity (mA) Ratings
The capacity rating of a converter or adapter indicates the maximum current that can be pulled through it. Electrical devices may or may not be labeled with the current draw (the amount of current that the device "pulls"). If you are not sure of the current draw, you can check the original adapter's rating and use an adapter which provides at least that much capacity, or contact the device's manufacturer for a recommendation.
Current draw is additive; that is to say that if two or more devices are connected to a current source, the total current draw is equal to all of their current draws added together. For example, if two devices, one with a current draw of 250 mA and one with a current draw of 400 mA, are connected to a single source, then the total current draw on that source is 650 mA.
Understanding Polarity Markings
![]() In order to select the proper converter for your electrical device, you need to be sure that the polarity is correct. Polarity is generally described as either "tip positive" or "tip negative" and is often indicated using the symbology to the right. You will need to know the polarity for both the converter and for the power jack on your device. If the converter has a fixed tip, the polarity should be indicated either on the lable or in the manual or instructions. If the converter has a changeable tip, polarity should be indicated by markings on the tip and the connection point. The electrical device will generally have the polarity marked very near to the jack itself. If there is not a polarity marking, you should check the manual or instructions for power requirements. If the information is still not found, you should contact the device's manufacturer for assistance. Note: Devices which require a proprietary adapter or converter may not list this information at all, as using a non-approved adapter or converter could cause damage to the converter or attached device and/or constitute a fire hazard. |
